A growing number of climate groups are campaigning for the introduction of a wealth tax to ensure the transition to a sustainable economy is not done “on the backs of the poor”. Last week campaigners from Green New Deal Rising staged a sit-in outside the Reform UK party’s London headquarters as part of a wave of protests targeting the offices, shops and private clubs of the super-rich across the UK.

The Pay Up Campaign – backed by more than 20 civil society groups including Friends of the Earth, the National Education Union and Tax Justice UK – is calling on the government to bring in a series of wealth taxes as an alternative to spending cuts. It is one of a number of campaign initiatives focused on overhauling the tax regime being run by climate groups who say the revenue from the ultra-rich could fund investment, restore crumbling public services and help tackle the climate emergency.

(1) Custo a entender o motivo pelo qual a campanha contra os “inimigos do povo” encastelados no Congresso Nacional, que recém inundou o facebook por conta da recusa em elevar o IOF, cessou como por encanto após o anúncio das tarifas trumpianas em retaliação explícita ao processo contra Bolsonaro e à regulamentação das Big Techs. Pois não seria justamente o momento de levar a voto no Congresso, em regime de urgência, uma moção extraída do editorial do Estadão -  por quê não - de repúdio a essa odiosa agressão à soberania nacional? E obrigar os picaretas-chantagistas-entreguistas a arcar com as consequências de seus votos? Não nos iludamos: este Congresso está morto como instituição democrática desde o impeachment de Dilma Rousseff. Só falta enterrá-lo, até porque o fedor está insuportável. Precisamos de um novo Congresso, eleito sob regras que impeçam a compra direta ou indireta das cadeiras parlamentares, a venda de votos mediante mensalões e emendas secretas, a farta distribuição de benesses aos parlamentares e seus apaniguados etc.

(2) Os Bolsonaro não são culpados pelas tarifas de Trump. Eles não têm esse poder. Trump é o responsável pela agressão que escolheu perpetrar contra a soberania do Brasil e os Bolsonaro por conspirar em seu favor - portanto contra a soberania nacional - antes, durante e depois do anúncio. E me parece ingenuidade levar ao pé da letra as razões explicitadas, isto é, as tarifas como chantagem para resgatar Bolsonaro; Trump está usando Bolsonaro, um mero capitão do mato a quem despreza como a uma barata, como peão em sua campanha pela colonização das Américas - da Groenlândia à Terra do Fogo - uma espécie de Doutrina Monroe do século XXI para a qual a participação do Brasil nos BRICs é intolerável. Outras agressões virão, com ou sem o concurso dos Bolsonaro.

(3) E por falar em BRICS, o governo brasileiro precisa decidir se os BRICS são uma aliança econômica de Estados nacionais ou um puxadinho da Internacional Bonapartista tão cara aos quadros do PT. Se a Rússia de Putin pode, por quê não a Venezuela de Maduro? Porque Lula se emputeceu com Maduro por ter fraudado a própria eleição?

Antigovernment protests started in November, after a renovated rail station canopy in the northern city of Novi Sad collapsed, killing 16 people. Many in Serbia blamed the tragedy on corruption-fuelled negligence in state infrastructure projects. (..)

The student-led protests have since focused their demands on the need for snap elections instead of regular elections planned for 2027. In advance of Saturday’s protest, organisers had issued an “ultimatum” for Vucic to announce a new vote by 9pm (19:00 GMT) that day – a demand he rejected.

Protesters are also stressing the need to ensure that elections are free and fair through several reforms, including a review of voter records, equal access to media for all participants in political life and measures to prevent vote-buying.

Other requests also include reforming the education system, recognising student bodies – known as plenums – as legal entities, ensuring fair wages for all education sector workers, and respecting the autonomy of universities.

So I’m definitely scared of what the many antisemites inside or with close ties to the Trump administration may eventually do. And no, I’m not frightened at all by the prospect that New York may soon have a somewhat leftist Muslim mayor.

Anyway, my personal fears are beside the point. Everyone who cares about keeping America America needs to take a stand against the resurgence of bigotry. Because the truth is that we’re all rats now.”
