"Tem de mudar a meta do Acordo de Paris”, disse Nobre, que está em Belém para a COP-30, em entrevista ao Estadão / Broadcast. 

“Estamos muito perto de chegar ao 1,5º Celsius de aquecimento global. Se mantivermos a direção de zerar as emissões líquidas só em 2050, vamos passar de 2º Celsius”, afirmou Nobre, acrescentando que alguns estudos mostram o risco de a temperatura média global do planeta aumentar em 2,5º Celsius. Além do derretimento de geleiras e da extinção de 18% a 25% da biodiversidade dos oceanos, um aquecimento mais alto vai aumentar o já “risco gigantesco de epidemias, como já vimos na Amazônia em 2024”, segundo Nobre.

“Se continuarmos a perturbar a natureza desse jeito, vamos ver mais epidemias e pandemias. No ano passado, a região da Amazônia já viu epidemias da febre mayaro e da febre oropouche”, afirmou Nobre, único cientista brasileiro a participar da coalizão de universidades e organizações científicas chamada Planetary Science. Meta projected 10% of its 2024 revenue would come from ads for scams and banned goods, documents seen by Reuters show. And the social media giant internally estimates that its platforms show users 15 billion scam ads a day. Among its responses to suspected rogue marketers: charging them a premium for ads – and issuing reports on ’Scammiest Scammers.’ (..)

A cache of previously unreported documents reviewed by Reuters also shows that the social-media giant for at least three years failed to identify and stop an avalanche of ads that exposed Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp’s billions of users to fraudulent e-commerce and investment schemes, illegal online casinos, and the sale of banned medical products.

On average, one December 2024 document notes, the company shows its platforms’ users an estimated 15 billion “higher risk” scam advertisements – those that show clear signs of being fraudulent – every day. Meta earns about $7 billion in annualized revenue from this category of scam ads each year, another late 2024 document states. (..)

A Amazônia está próxima de atingir um ponto crítico de degradação ambiental que pode resultar em mudanças irreversíveis para o bioma, alerta Carlos Nobre, meteorologista e pesquisador pioneiro no estudo do fenômeno da savanização da região, em entrevista ao CNN Novo Dia.

O cientista, que iniciou suas pesquisas no final dos anos 1980, quando a Amazônia apresentava apenas 7% de área desmatada, revela que atualmente o desmatamento atinge entre 17% e 18% de toda a região, chegando a 22% na porção brasileira do bioma. (..)

Se o ponto de não-retorno for ultrapassado, Nobre adverte que entre 30 e 50 anos cerca de 70% da floresta amazônica pode ser perdida. O pesquisador ressalta que o bioma desenvolveu, ao longo de milhões de anos, mecanismos únicos de estabilidade climática, tendo absorvido mais de 150 bilhões de toneladas de carbono. (..)

Não foi desta vez que os países reunidos para a Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre as Mudanças Climáticas atacaram o cerne do problema à altura da emergência climática. O acordo final da COP30 não menciona a necessidade de um roteiro para os países diminuírem a dependência dos combustíveis fósseis. No lugar, foi lançada uma iniciativa para debater o assunto entre os países.

Jura? Mas por quê só pensou nisso depois, e não antes, da COP30?

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese has warned that the recent UN Security Council resolution on Gaza violates the UN Charter and the Palestinian right to self-determination.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Albanese said that the resolution "betrays the people it claims to protect", entrenches the Israeli occupation's ongoing unlawful policies and practices and contributes to legitimizing continued mass violence.

She said the mandate to "secure borders protect civilians and decommission weapons" focuses almost exclusively on disarming Palestinian armed groups while taking no steps to end the root causes of violence: the ongoing unlawful siege, occupation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing practiced by the Israeli Occupation. Israel has destroyed more than 1,500 buildings in areas of Gaza that have remained under its control since the ceasefire with Hamas started on 10 October, satellite images reviewed by BBC Verify show. The new photos - the latest of which was taken on 8 November - show that entire neighbourhoods controlled by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been levelled in less than a month, apparently through demolitions. The actual number of destroyed buildings could be significantly higher, with satellite imagery for some areas being unavailable for BBC Verify's assessment.

Meta projected that 10% of its overall sales in 2024, or about $16 billion, came from running online ads for scams and banned goods, according to a Thursday report from Reuters.

Those kinds of ads included promotions for “fraudulent e-commerce and investment schemes, illegal online casinos and the sale of banned medical products,” according to the Reuters report, which was based on internal company documents. Those documents showed the company’s attempts to measure the prevalence of fraudulent advertising on its apps like Facebook and Instagram.

Meta brought in more than $164.5 billion in overall sales for 2024. Last week, the company said that third-quarter sales rose 26% year-over-year to $51.24 billion and that it lifted the low end of its total expenses for the year by $2 billion as part of its massive investments into artificial intelligence.

The Reuters report cited a December 2024 document that showed how Meta each year generates roughly $7 billion in annualized sales from so-called “higher risk” scam ads, which are promotions that are clearly deceptive. Each day, Meta shows users an estimated 15 billion of these higher risk scam ads, the Reuters report said, citing a separate document.

Although some of the documents show that Meta aims to reduce the amount of bogus ads on its platform, the Reuters report also said that other documents suggest the company is concerned that its business projections could be impacted by any abrupt removal of the fraudulent promotions. (..)

A fala do negociador Richard Muyungi, da Tanzânia, expõe uma das maiores contradições do debate climático global: enquanto países desenvolvidos pressionam por metas de descarbonização e adoção de veículos elétricos, quase metade da população africana ainda vive no escuro, sem acesso sequer à energia básica para cozinhar, estudar ou trabalhar.

Muyungi destacou que o continente africano enfrenta uma crise estrutural de energia, com redes elétricas frágeis, alto custo de expansão e dependência de fontes fósseis, mesmo tendo grande potencial em renováveis como solar e eólica. Para ele, antes de cobrar metas de eletrificação “verde”, é preciso garantir que a energia chegue a quem nunca teve. A prioridade deve ser o desenvolvimento, a infraestrutura e a inclusão energética, não apenas a substituição tecnológica.

Sem acesso universal à eletricidade, qualquer “transição energética” será apenas um privilégio de poucos. A justiça climática começa garantindo energia limpa e acessível para todos, não deixando quase meio continente para trás.
