Au moins 61 décès ont été attribués aux fortes chaleurs qui touchent le pays depuis plus d’un mois. Les températures record ont aussi sévèrement affecté la faune et la flore sur une grande partie du territoire, déjà en proie à la sécheresse et aux incendies.

Mexico has militarized its beaches. Over 8,000 National Guard, Marine and Army soldiers have been deployed to the country’s major tourist centers. The measure is the federal government’s attempt to save Easter Week after at least eight murders on April 3 tarnished the idyllic postcard image of two major vacation destinations: Acapulco (Guerrero) and Cancun (Quintana Roo). The government quickly dispatched 4,724 soldiers to both cities, Tulum, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán and Veracruz. Another 3,800 soldiers are guarding the country’s highways.

Military hid evidence that student teachers who went missing in 2014 were kidnapped by criminals, independent report finds. (..) The students from a radical teachers’ college were abducted by local police in southern Guerrero state who presumably killed them and burned their bodies. But the students were under surveillance because their college, which has strong ties to leftwing social movements in Mexico, was viewed as a hotbed of subversion, the experts said. (..)
